“The cause of first rate Christian education requires a constant willingness to examine the expectations of students, families and future customers of Rochester Christian School (RCS) and strive to meet these expectations.”
To meet the needs of today’s customers and to equip the RCS campus with a facility improvement that assists the school in meeting its mission of providing an education of ‘unsurpassed quality’, the RCS Foundation is joining with School leadership in the fundraising effort to support the renovation of existing space to create a School Café.
“Build and enhance to meet daily needs.”
By transforming lunch and snack activities from the long standing tradition of consumption inside of the classroom to a standardized Café setting, teachers can maintain their classroom focus on individualized instruction and learning, while food related activities are relegated to space designed for this purpose. This facility improvement will touch every student, every day!
"Initial concept is to make this modern and up-to-date, something that stands out, something that you wouldn't be able to find at another school."
Centralization of food activities, moving food and beverage consumption from educational classroom settings to a café style space design to handle food related activities.
Café to accommodate up to 240 people, in as many as three lunch shifts.
Promote overall facility cleanliness and health care standards. Stain and odor reduction.
Due to the proximity of space near the kitchen along with the availability of associated water services, rooms #11 and #16 have been identified as suitable space.
The adjacent wall to these two rooms will be opened to create adequate traffic area to accommodate seating up to 80. Café to accommodate 160 in two lunch sections, 240 in three sections (current facility max. point).
Matching exterior window replacement in room #16 (required) and #11.
New interior window on eastern wall of room #16 (creates visibility into room #16 from hallway). Increases security and safety level, as well as visual enhancement for school tours.
Per design team, ceiling tiles and grids to be removed to add height element.
New, energy efficient lighting.
Unified replacement flooring.
New variable height tables and seating to be incorporated per room motif.
Green initiative to be incorporated (reduce, re-use and recycle).
Tiered height cabinetry under consideration to assist varied student height and reach levels.
Stand alone room usage – non-shared with instructional facility needs (art instruction relocated to separate room).
While designed to incorporate a partition mid-room, it has been determined that this element is not required at this time.
Additional consideration is to be given to equipping room with appropriately sized AV equipment (projector, sound system, screen), as resources are identified and become available.
Plan The project is divided into three phases:
♦ Structural ♦ Interior Remodeling ♦ Furnishings
The Structural Phase is focused on protecting the asset; conducting engineering assessment, design & drawings, and conducting necessary repairs and upgrades to the Café envelope.
The Interior Remodeling Phase is focused on interior work; plumbing and fixtures, painting, ceiling work, flooring, lighting and cabinetry.
The Furnishings Phase equips the Café with tables and seating, audio visual and décor finishings. This phase puts the uniqueness and ‘sizzle’ into the Café.
Each Phase will commence only with the identification of available funding.

cafe project:
The Café Project kicked off with a formal working agreement between the School and Foundation at the end of the summer ’09. General contractor responsibilities are being headed up by Paul VanHeyningen, RCS Building & Grounds Chairman.
Engineered drawings and specifications have been obtained, and design parameters and specifications have also been determined. General clean-up activities have been conducted with in-house, volunteer labor.
The project hit an early snag during demolition and clean-up when the presence of asbestos was determined and detected in the old flooring. Immediate remediation was contracted and proper state filings have been submitted, now making this space free and clear of all asbestos!
Town and fire marshal approvals are being obtained through required permits.
Masonry work has been completed, and new windows have been ordered.
It is our goal to have this space buttoned up before inclement weather arrives, allowing the interior remodeling to be conducted with the start of Phase Two.

Phase One funding commitments total $25,000. This amount initially covered all of the Phase One activities, however, the $6,050 cost to remove and clean the asbestos areas are an unplanned cost that has added to the Phase One project total.
Phase Two – Interior Remodeling
We are actively seeking donors and funders to undertake and support the Phase Two project costs. The project will only proceed when funding has been identified and committed, no debt will be incurred during the course of this project.
The Foundation is now able to receive and process on-line donations specific for the Café Project. Tax-deductible gifts can be made to the Foundation using all major credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover). Consider now how you might support this exciting project!
