| Summer Reading |

Middle school Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Randi Dalgleish, realizes that students need time to rest and relax over the summer, however not at the expense of reading a few good books! It's her expectation that all 7th and 8th grade students read at least two novels while on summer vacation. Students get to choose the books from her personal library and over the years, she has collected quite a variety of titles. She relies heavily on recommendations from Mrs. Porte, our RCS librarian, and other middle-school age-appropriate reading lists. Each student is partnered with another student from the class. Midway through the summer, the partners, with the help of their parents, make arrangements to meet and switch books. In that way, communication and contact is encouraged between fellow classmates. It also provides an opportunity to "review" the books with someone, plus catch up with each other's summer activities! When the students return the first week of school in September, Mrs. Dalgleish has them do a creative activity associated with one or both book titles they've read. The students wouldn't call it a typical book report assignment, yet it provides an opportunity to assess whether or not students really did read and understand the novel they chose. Among some of the favorites novels to choose from include:
Banner in the Sky
Just Ella The Tiger Rising Number the Stars The Summer of the Swans The Year of the Hangman New students are encouraged to choose titles from the list above and to spend a portion of their summer inside a good book… Both Mrs. Dalgleish and Mrs. Porte love to see students read for their own enjoyment and they work well together in creatively presenting the RCS Middle School Summer Reading program every year. |
